Epic Disaster

I decided to be adventurous and try some new vegetables when I was at the Wet Market. I decided that I would make some soup because Chinese people are really into making soups. When we went to Lion's Grove Garden with the Hiatts, Paula taught me that lotus root is native here and can only be found here in China. It's very difficult to go underwater and harvest the root of the "lily pads". If it's not done correctly, it is not editable.

Well I found some at the Wet Market and decided to add it to the soup. Bethany tried to wash it. :) It was open ended and has lots of holes in the middle so the water was running straight through. We looked up online how to cook the lotus root and found that we needed to add a little bit of vinegar to the water when we cooked it. I added what I thought was a little bit of vinegar to my growing pot of vegetables and cooked it.

I was really excited about this soup and all the yummy vegetables that were in it. When we sat down to eat it, I tasted the soup and realized it wasn't what I expected. Everyone at the table was trying really hard to figure out how to say that they didn't like it. Once I said it didn't taste good then, the tension was eased and everyone expressed their dislike. I had had lotus root before and liked it. I think the problem this time was the vinegar.

We tried to drain off the broth and salvage the vegetables for another soup but, unfortunately the still tasted like vinegar. I might as well have made pickle soup! It just wasn't good at all!!
